The scope comes with argon purging which gives it, its water and fog proofing. The Vortex Optics Diamondback has advanced fully multi-coated optics, so you will have clear, sharp images in your cross-hairs and you will be sure whether you have a kudu, eland or lion facing you, rather than a blurry brown animal.

The size is also suitable for a range of applications from a slug shotgun or long range rifle. Take a look at the features, pros and cons and decide if this scope measures up.

Features

  • It is made from high quality aluminum
  • It has a dot design that helps to eliminate any uncertainty on holdover and windage directions
  • It is made from solid aluminum alloy and this makes it incredibly durable and resistant to heavy recoil
  • It comes with argon purging which provides waterproof and fog proof qualities
  • It has high end fully multi-coated optics which provides clear, sharp images in the cross-hairs
  • The 4-12×40 size of the riflescope is suited to a range of applications, ranging from big game to predators and is suitable for various weapon types.
  • It has a 3.1 inch (7.87cm) eye relief
  • It has a precision-Glide erector system that uses premium components in the zoom lens, this means that the magnification is smooth under a range of conditions.
  • Weight: 14.6 ounces (414 g)
  • Dimensions: 12 x 1.89 inches (30.48cm x 4.8cm)

Pros

  • The glass in this scope provides clear, crisp images with no distortion around the edges.
  • The scope tracks very well and keeps its zero
  • The zoom is smooth and easy to operate
  • It is well built and the clicks on the turrets are solid

Cons

  • The crosshairs can become a bit fuzzy at high zooms (5x and more)
  • The eye relief is a bit shallow for higher caliber weapons
  • The parallax is fixed at 100 yards (91m) and at under 50 yards (45m) the parallax is not good.

Summary

This is a scope will work well for distances of 200 yards (182m) or more. It is a cross-hair scope and the Bullet Drop Compensation (BDC) reticle will give you a great advantage for long range shots up to 500 yards (457m).

The zoom is as smooth as the manufacturer claims and you will be able to track your quarry easily, it also keeps its zero well. The image is crisp and there is no distortion around the edges. It is easy to make adjustments and there is a clear click with each MOA.

On the other hand, the crosshairs may become fuzzy at higher zooms and will perhaps be an annoyance if you want both the image and the crosshairs crystal clear. The eye relief is a bit shallow at 3 inches if you use a higher calibre weapon with a lot of recoil a deeper eye relief of around 4 inches would be more suitable.

The parallax is fixed at 100 yards (91m) and under 50 yards (45m) and closer distances such as 25 yards (22.5m) it does not perform as well.

Comparison

This is a well priced, economic scope with good light and clarity. It is very good quality for this price range and not many other scopes can offer the same clarity, smooth zoom with good options at a lower price. The lens quality compares very well to other high end brands, but the price is more reasonable.

It is best suited for lower caliber weapons or an entry level hunter. If you use a higher caliber weapon such as .308, a deeper eye relief will be more comfortable and keep you from explaining a black eye when you get home.

Verdict

This scope is a really good choice if you want a clear, quality scope without destroying your budget and leaving you to choose between a scope and an actual hunting trip. It has real value for money and has excellent lens quality for a scope of this price range.

The image is clear and sharp and you won’t have to struggle with fuzzy or blurred views when you are shooting, it may have some distortion at high zoom levels and in very low light, depending on the lens settings.

The Vortex Optics Diamondback 4-12×40 dead-hold BDC Reticle – 1 Inch tube (DBK-04-BDC) is a good scope for an entry level hunter or if you prefer to use a lower calibre weapon and you will have a tough time finding the same quality scope at this price range.
